There’s no better way to usher in the winter months than by grabbing ice skates and visiting one of Boston’s best ice-skating rinks. December is full of promise; the holidays are approaching, and we’re all anticipating what the new year could bring. Skating is the perfect fit for the optimistic feeling many of us have as we prepare to say goodbye to 2014. With that in mind, we’ve compiled a list of the best indoor and outdoor ice rinks in Boston to help you choose.

1. Frog Pond on the Boston Common

One of the most popular options on the list, this downtown destination offers great views, restrooms and other amenities, nearby parking and a central location. Night skating in December — or any time — is a special treat, as the surrounding trees are covered in sparkling lights.

Frog pond is located at The Boston Common Frog Pond in Boston, MA 02108.

2. Steriti Memorial Rink

This North End rink is a somewhat less crowded option than the Frog Pond. Admission is free, and skate rentals are reasonable at $5 if you don’t have your own pair.

Steriti Memorial Rink is located at 561 Commercial Street, Boston, MA 02109.

3. Murphy Memorial Rink

This is another option for an affordable day with the kids, afternoon date or solo skate. With low-priced rentals and free admission, you don’t have to break the bank to experience smooth ice and friendly service.

Murphy Memorial Rink is located at 1881 William Day Blvd, Boston, MA 02127.

4. Matthews Arena

This historic Northeastern University arena offers free open skate hours with smaller crowds than you’ll find at many Boston rinks. The ice and venue are well maintained, and an abundance of neighboring restaurants makes it easy for couples and groups to while away an afternoon in the area.

Matthews Arena is located at 38-262 St. Botolph Street, Boston, MA 02115.

5. Larz Anderson Park

Located outside the city in Brookline, this local favorite provides skaters with consistently good service and an immaculately maintained rink. The atmosphere is pleasant and family-friendly, and parents will appreciate the dedicated kids’ rink and changing area.

Larz Anderson Park is located at 25 Newton Street, Brookline, MA 02445.

Whether you’re looking for family fun, an afternoon date idea or a way to relive childhood memories, ice-skating has always been the perfect December activity. Savor the end of 2014 by hitting the ice at one of the many amazing skating rinks in Boston.
