Is Gingivitis Preventable?

Gingivitis is simply defined as the inflammation of gingival tissues in the mouth. It’s a common condition that affects up to 90% of all adults, but it is completely preventable and reversible! Fortunately, our experience dentist at Back Bay Dental can help!

How Do You Know if You Have Gingivitis?

It’s fairly easy to see if you have gingivitis. Symptoms include gum tissues that are:

  • Red (instead of coral)
  • Sensitive or bleed during brushing and flossing
  • Swollen along the margins

Gingivitis is your body’s way of reacting to an infection. It is an inflammatory response caused by bacterial plaque. If the plaque is not completely removed through thorough brushing and flossing, that bacteria can cause the body to respond to it as if it were an infection, or unclean wound.

Why Treatment is Important

Unfortunately, if gingivitis is not reversed through preventive dental care and oral hygiene, it can become a serious condition known as periodontal disease. Periodontal disease causes the gums to detach from the teeth and destroys supporting bone that holds teeth into the jaw. Eventually the teeth become loose and fall out. Recognizing gingivitis when it first appears and taking the proper steps to treat it is the best way to enjoy teeth that last a lifetime.

Reversing Gingivitis

With proper dental care, symptoms of gingivitis can be reversed in just two weeks. Preventive cleanings every 6 months will remove plaque deposits as well as calcified tartar from the teeth. After the cleaning, it is important to focus toothbrushing along the margins of the gums, followed by a thorough flossing regimen. Your dental hygienist can provide you with detailed home care instructions and tips to target the hard-to-reach areas on your own. Over the next several days, the gingivitis should completely reverse.

Preventive dentistry is at the foundation of our services at Back Bay Dental Care. We want our patients to enjoy a lifetime of healthy, disease-free smiles. If it’s been longer than 6 months since your last preventive cleaning, give us a call!
